Computer Help - RAM or Graphics Card?
-
OK I'm running Windows Vista Home Basic on a 3.56 Ghz Pentium D Processor with 512 Mb RAM. The graphics card is made by Intel (It's built into the motherboard) with 64 Mb Video memory. I play some games such as Command and Conquer Generals and Guild Wars, but I mostly listen to music, browse the internet and use MSN Live Messenger. When nothing else besides the Windows Sidebar and the OS are loaded, the RAM usage it up between 75 and 80 percent. For whatever reason, programs are loading very slowly and sometimes freeze up. I am wondering if this is the graphics card or the fact that I need more RAM. Thank you!

Answer:
512MB is not enough to run vista effectively. You need 1GB at MINIMUM, but I recommend 2GB. Your 64MB of video memory is pretty low these days. I recommend spending another 60 bucks or so and getting at least a 128MB nvidia geforce 66xx series or better.

Quite honestly. I'm surprised you can run vista with half a gig of ram. You need both.

graphics card issues are generally slow renderings or glitches in the way things are displayed. so it doesnt sound like its your card. hopefully it's not time yet to do a fresh reinstall of the OS. possibly a RAM upgrade is in order. most computers these days need at least 1GIG or more. at 512MB you won't be able to have many apps open at once. also, when playing games you should have everything else closed to get the benefit of all the ram you can get!!! ALSO-- check out that you are not running out of hard drive space. that will also slow your computer down.

512 is the minimum req for vista. but it will be slow. 1 gig will be a nice upgrade.

Definite ram issue 512 isn't near enough ram for vista, also turn off the aero feature and the sidebar they both eat a lot of ram. Good Luck

If you're using Vista, I would reccomend buying the RAM if you're not a huge gamer. You could also pick up a flash drive or two and use it for Window ReadyBoost... My laptop has only a gig of RAM in it, and I keep a 512 Flash drive plugged in at all times, all ReadyBoost does is use the flash drive as RAM.

Vista requirement is 1Gig ram but I would recommend 2gig if you want a good experience with vista. Your graphics card is ok if you don't play games much.

you can only have.. Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 or 256MB Nvidia GeForce Go 7400 and they are integrated video. so you cannot add a graphics card.
