When I turn on my computer, I can't get the internet for about 20 seconds until my desktop refreshes. Why?

Maybe your computer is in a "sleep Mode" Check your settings..

My home pc seems to keep getting slower also. 1. Add more memory. 2. Clean out your cookies, and files. 3. Check the speed of your connection with your provider on their website.

well lets start with some basics. What operating system are you running. How are you connecting to the internet Dialup, Dsl Cablesatellite etc.... What type of connector are you using to connect to your DSL/Cable modem USB or ethernet? Have you done an ipconfig from the command prompt?What firewall if any are you running?Does your provider require a proxy server? Answer as many of these as possible and you can get some nswers that may be helpful Ok more than likely it is the network card getting an address from the router. For better security I always recommend turing off DHCP and hardcoding the IP address for your computers it is not hard to do. I also use the 10 net you can pick any art of it to use. So you set your router to 10.33.56.23 it then becomes the DNS server and the default gateway. You give your computers adresses like 10.33.56.30 .31.32 and so on. Also check the event viewer to see what else is going on? Start run eventvwr

what is your internet provider. if it is dial-up and it connects when you turn on your computer it will take a while to connect. but i would not know alot about dial up lol. if it is RoadRunner it may take a few seconds for the computer to recignize the internet.

Might not have enough memory installed, and also have too many things running at the start up of your computer. Depending on what FireWall you are using, that could also be the cause of the hesitation, it might be blocking all connections until it does a full check, this is to prevent any outside intrusions. Or, your router may have reconfigured itself, try reseting it.

When you first turn on the computer, it does an internal self check to make sure everything is working the way it's supposed to. Depending on how many programs are running at start up, this self check can take up to a minute to run. It's nothing to be concerned about. Unless you start getting error messages. Which is another reason why you want the computer to run those checks..... so you can fix something that might be broke.
