How do I reset my settings?

How do i reset my computer back to factory settings?

  • hi, my computer has a whole bunch of viruses on it. i want to completely reset it so all the viruses are gone. i dont care about any of the stuff i have on it, i know it will gwt rid of everything, but thats what i want. I DONT HAVE ANY DISCS THAT CAME WITH IT. so i CANT put in a repair disc. also i cant even put in a anti virus disc because the computer wont load anything. when i try to, it comes up with a thing like "ERROR ERROR CAN NOT COMPUTE" well it doesnt say that, but it says something like that. I cant even hit start without and error thing coming up. so when i put in a disc, that thing just pops up. Ive also tried to hit the "f" buttons, but there is nothing i can hit that says "reset factory settings" which is what some people have told me to do. it was made in 2005 or 2006, so i dont know if only the newer computers with like vista or windows 7 have that. But if anyone knows of a way to completely reset a computers hard drive without any repair discs, without hitting any "f" buttons when the computer starts up, or using any kind of discs to just get rid of the viruses. that would be great thanks

Have you tried to do a system restore to an earlier date? The only way to change it to factory setting is using the CD. Just call your computer's company and ask them to send you the CD.

I would set a system restore point the furthest date back as possible. Open the start menu>All programs>accessories>system tools>system restore. Those steps were from Windows Vista. Not sure what they are for XP or whatever you're using.

I don't think you really want to go back to "factory settings." I am going to assume you have Windows, hopefully XP, because this works on XP. I don't know about Windows 7 or Vista. Click on Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and then click on System Restore. This restores the operating system to an earlier date. The only dates you can use are the bolded ones, so pick an earlier date and restore to that date. I also seriously doubt that you "have a bunch of viruses." If you have only one, your computer probably wouldn't operate at all. What you have is spyware and malware from the internet, and yes, if left alone on your hard drive, they will cause problems. Why not get the free help you need and stop obsessing about wiping out your hard drive. You can't do that unless you have an operating system disk to reinstall your operating system. And last, why the he** are you even on the internet without antivirus and antispyware installed. Both are free and are the top rated products today. Avast for antivirus and AntiSpyware and Ad-Aware for spyware and malware. If you install them, and you DO have a virus, Avast will find it immediately. If you don't have a virus, as I suspect, then run a full scan with SuperAntiSpyware, following that with a full scan by Ad-Aware. http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php http://www.download.com/Avast-Home-Edition/3000-2239-10019223.html http://www.filehippo.com/download_superantispyware/

Baisacly you cant. You'll have to send it to a PC shop and they can do it. It all relys on the discs my friend.

You can combine your hard drives for example c:, d: or e : into a single hard drive that will be default c: with the use of Partition Magic make sure that your hard disk is converted to NTFS. After that format your PC and install a fresh O.S with a latest antivirus and all your viruses will be removed permanently from your hard disk.

Shut off, then when it starts up press F4 over and over and go into safe mode. There's options like that. I THINK that's the buttons. Good luck, and sorry about the viruses.

¡Viva la Cobra!

just got to control panel in the system icon.select software and click on software profile to reset

That's only possible if your computer has a recovery partition from which it can be restored, that depends on the manufacturer, but if you didn't get a recovery disc when you bought it, than it could be. You should consult your computers manual. Otherwise i'm sorry, there is little you can do.
