Why is my computer running slow?

Why is my computer running so slow? What can I do (myself) to make it not so sluggish? Thanks in advance!!?

  • I use the internet for all types of things -- as many of us do. I watch video's, email and some data processing from time-to-time. I would tell you though, for the most part, I use the internet to watch television shows that I have missed and sometimes movies. I have AVG Free Antivirus program, I have used AVAST anti virus programs before and McAfee must be on my comp8uter because from time-to-time a pop up will appear asking me if I want to run it. Because my computer (for the last couple of days) has been running really sluggish I googled what to do. I defrag'd my computer and it helped for about a day. Today, however, I was sending an email (Yahoo) and the text was running so slow -- but didnt completely seize up my computer -- not to the point that I needed to reboot-- but WOW...!! It was slow! While I was typing and the computer / text seemed to be suspended for a few seconds, I could hear my computer doing some kind of gurgling sound -- as if it is trying to process something. One of my tech friends said that's called latent (as in running behind) and although I *get* that! (Grin) I want to know what I can do (for free) to unclog my computer. I apologize for the ignorant description I have given -- but I'm not a computer geek -- but I absolutely love using my computer! Could someone explain what's going on? I empty my cookies every day and sometimes more than 1 or 2x a day. To whomever is able and willing to respond -- will you kindly be patient enough to explain the solution Step-by-Step (on what to do to fix it) and in terms that I can understand??? Talk to me like I'm from another planet! I wont be offended! Ha ha. I will be SO grateful if someone can help me!!! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!!!!

Actually...most people on here are giving you advice that would work if you in fact had a virus..ie trojan. I did not see where you gave what operating system that you are running xp, vista, 7 or a linux kernel. If your system is over two years old here is what you need to do. 1.Backup and save any files to a disc. 2.If your system came with restore disks...and you have saved everything to a disc that is now out of your computer...run the disc. This will restore your computer as it was when it was new. No restore disk? read 3. 3. Many of the systems over the last few years do not come with restore disks...alot of them use the F11 function key on your keyboard. To use this function...shut down windows. Restart your computer and hold down the F11 key...follow the instructions...This will restore your computer as it was when it was new. If you have some tech buddies and you do not feel comfortable doing the above...have them help you...it is not really that hard.

Easy! Most of slow pcs is due to registry eroor. Clean registry can make pc faster. If your pc not fast, please let me know. My email is [email protected]

Google Chrome is a nice light weight browser (if your still using IE you should switch... like now) CCleaner is a great cleaning program it does disc cleanup (helps a lot) and registry issues (always do more than one doesn't always catch them all) I really recommend uninstalling all the unnecessary programs (Avast, and McAfee if they aren't used) as they take quite a bit space and take RAM. Oh and bring up the task manager, go to processes, and end processes to anything that looks like it's taking up a lot of space and isn't needed. And last you may want to change your start up programs so your computer can start up faster.

I'm not a computer geek either but have learned enough to be able to download anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-adware, root-kit programs and others for free at http://www.komando.com/ I get her Tip of the day e-mail and weekly newsletter. If you go to her website adn click on Tips near the top of the page it takes you to many saved tips that deal with exactly what you're dealing with. Because the cause of what ails your computer could be one of many issues or a combination of issues, unless lucky you will most likely not get the in-depth, step-by-step answer you need in this forum. If you visit Kim's site, read the many tips, and implement them most likely you will be able speed up your computer. I will warn you though that unless you know computers well you must be prepared and willing to spend many hours fixing your issue(s). One word of warning though, if you have an old computer (5 years or more) with an old operating system and/or out of date programs all your work will most likely be in vain. Sometimes, you just have to have up to date equipment and programs!
