How can I convince my parents to get me a gaming PC?
-
Okay, im going to tell you EVERYTHING, so only answer if you have read it all. Im 15 years old (almost 16) and am in my last year at secondary school. when i was 13 my parents got me a laptop for christmas (2009), it probally cost around £100. it was bad, really bad but i had no idea about computers then so i loved it. Around may 2010 i realized that my laptop was no good, it couldnt run without the charger and always overheated and died, so i asked for a new laptop, anything was better that what i had then. So my parents found a cheap deal (£200) and brought me a new laptop as a very early Christmas present (i didnt get much at christmas 2010) so i had my new laptop! it seemed great, it was a big upgrade from what i previously had. plus it could run some games! Christmas 2010 came and went and my laptop was doing an ok job. Then when my birthday rolled around (february 2011) i knew what i wanted to do, i wanted to learn how to develop games myself, so i wanted another laptop that could handle all that plus i wanted it to be able to play games aswell. so for my birthday i saved up £550 and purchased another laptop. this time around i knew quite alot about computers so i knew i had brought the best laptop i could buy with my £550. This laptop is the one i am currently using to type this. it has Processor: Intel i3 RAM: 4GB Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce 310M 512mb HDD: 500GB It took me ages to convince my parents to let me buy this laptop as i have already had 2, so i told them what i wanted to do and how my old laptop is too slow and its no good for gaming and eventually they let me get it yeah its great! i can run a most games on it now but i have to have the specs down to a minimum. and it is still working fine up to today. i can run alot of programmes i need for my game development im learning and it is a pretty powerful laptop. So here is my problem. Christmas 2011 is coming very soon and my parents keep bugging me about what i want and i honestly dont know i have everything i need, xbox, decent tv, decent laptop, all of that good stuff and the only thing that has crossed my mind is a gaming PC, now before you think anything, here me out. i have always wanted a gaming PC desktop as they are so much better and more powerful that laptops, my laptop will be great when i travel to places as it is portable but i want to experience the best of the best. if i didnt buy this laptop for my birthday then i know they would get me one for christmas but cause ive had 3 laptops in such a small space of time i dont think i have no hope. i have found a amazing gaming desktop for £530 and i want to ask my parents for it as i have no idea what else to get and this is the thing i want the most. i am also willing to pay for a monitor and accessories myself as it doesnt come with one. i have been thinking of ways to ask them to get me it but i dont think any of my ideas will work. plus i cant use the excuses like 'my old laptop is so slow and this PC is so fast' as my laptop isnt slow. i also told my parents that this laptop can run alot of games so they would let me buy it so i cant say 'my laptop is good but its no good for gaming' i have thought about mentioning the fact that im going to be going college soon to study IT and game development, or that i want to play games with maxed out settings to get the full experience. also i have thought about saying that the PC will last me years as it is upgradable so when new software comes out i can just put parts in. sorry this is so long but i really want this PC and i want to know what you guys think? what should i say? please help me :) thanks.

Answer:
I know exactly what you need. It's brilliant, will provide most of your requirements, and should last you for years. Ready? Wait for it............. ........it's called a job. Stop expecting your parents to pay for everything. Welcome to the real world. EDIT - I want! I want! I want! I had a paid job when I was 7 during my school holidays, and I've continued employment ever since. Your attitude to 'why would I get a job for my own christmas present' is, quite frankly, offensive. If you expect everything to be handed to you on a plate then I'm afraid that you are destined to be unemployable and a regular feature of the Jeremy Kyle show.

You spoiled brat, I worked very hard as a teen to get things I wanted, and you think you deserve it for doing nothing? Idiot, as the last comment says "real world"

I understand that you want a new pc for Christmas because you would like to eventually use it for college, etc... BUT... You do have a good laptop right now and getting a new desktop would seem ridiculous and redundant to your parents since you have had three in such a short time. I guess if you have to ask anyone how to ask for something than you must already know that your chances of getting what you ask for are slim to none. Getting back to using if eventually for college... You're not even 16 yet and college is at the minimum 2 years off... Ask yourself this...? Do you think that you'd still be happy with anything you get now in two years as far as any electronics go...?

The option you have got is to go for the full upgrade tell your parents that you need this gaming pc as if you do design your own games while at collage then you could bring the game home and try it on your pc to see how it plays with it being a better pc than they do have at collage. Then if there is any problems with the game you would be able to spot them with it being a faster pc. You could also say to your parents i will do the washing up for a year or do house work for your mum but how about grovelling to your parents. i hope you get the gaming pc and good luck

I red all your story, Add me on facebook, search me with my e-mail on facebook ([email protected]) maybe the yahoo police said something right, so your parents will see that u really want it, but I will still tell you some tips. 1. Don't say them "buy me a computer", u have to say help me buy a computer, then it will look like you care more then them about it, like you to give half of the money. 2. U have to look sad, so they will see that u really need it. 3. split the amount to parts, so it will look cheaper. (or buy a computer step by step (I did it so n for a week I got a new pc)). 4. Try to sale one or two of your laptops, it will be easier for you to buy the new pc since u will have a some money to start! 5. Go to the computer shop with your parents. There u can describe them what you need... 6. Chose this as the best answer

Ask your parents to buy you a cheap desktop computer secondhand (off Ebay or wherever), then slowly save up for parts to upgrade it. Tell them it's a practical computing project (which is true). Whilst this approach will take time, you will learn a lot along the way. A good programmer must understand the hardware too. If your parents still say no, respect that. You've got everything you asked for so far, be grateful for that.

ok i have read all of this information and i have a good idea for what you just said now let me get this straight. if you really want this gaming pc and you know its the best and you know there might not be a way to get it from your parents without having to sell your laptop. If you don't want to sell your laptop or you know your not aloud to sell your laptop then there are other ways like borrowing money and paying back in your own time, but dont give up in trying to get a good gaming pc because in the end you will be happy and you will realise that it is much better than a laptop and any console there is out there you can speak about your desktop to me if you add me on xbox live : (rocky619619) btw its funny how im 15 aswell in last year of secondary school and im going to college next year to study IT...

Generally for any game development class/ programming class you are provided with a computer lab and access to a computer to do your homework. Somethings may require a good PC, depending on what you're going for. But I'd assume they will provide you with the materials to do well in your class without a PC of your own. That being said I recommend to buy a... crap I forgot what they're called, but it's a sort of, oh that's right, a barebones system. These are PC's that come with the minimum (normally a good case and motherboard. Then you can easily save up or scrounge around for PC parts to upgrade. The bad thing is, yes, you won't be able to use this PC until you've got most of the parts for it, but it will be awesome once done (assuming it doesn't take like 2 years to complete, lol). Or you can just build your own. Seeing that you have a desktop already I suggest you rip the hard drive out of it (not literally), take the power supply out, and get a barebones system and insert your current HDD and Power supply unit into it. That way all you really need to buy is a graphics card, processor, and RAM, since you'll already have a HDD and operating system..... for all your computer needs don't go to bestbuy, go to NEWEGG.COM!!! The best site for computer hardware (sorry I sound like an ad, but I love this site so much it's not even funny).
