Is a DVD-RW disk different from a DVD-RAM disk?

I have a dvd-r burning problem...?

I have a Sony DRU-720A (http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru720adwn.htm#dwns) and im trying to burn a dvd onto a Memorex Dvd-r Disk. The problem is when i try to start the burn i get a "Can't Start burn. Please make sure you have inserted a blank dvd-r or dvd-rw disk. Also when i insert the memorex dvd-r disk i don't get an auto play and in properties it says File system= Raw (not sure if format has anything to do with it, but i have no option to format the disk). Ive tryed mutiple memorex dvd-rs thinking it just a bad disk but all of them are same. By the way, i have updated firmware. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Answer:

Just use a dvd+r and Nero with a free shrink download from afterdawn and you'll be on your way.I had the same problem.
