What power supply will work?

What graphics card and power supply will work with this Dell Inspiron 620 MT Desktop? PLEASE help?

  • I am looking to buying this Inspiron 620 MT computer (LINK BELOW) and making it pretty good for gaming BUT the issues at hand are that the computer comes with a horrible graphics card and a power supply which is not very good for graphics card upgrades. So what I can do is upgrade the power supply and the graphics card but I am not sure which one's would work with the computer, and which one's will work together. If you can, I would appreciate a link to two different Amazon items that would work perfectly. The specs to the computer are: a second gen i5 3ghz processor 6 gigs of ram 500 gb hard drive =/ and it ships with Intel HD Graphics and a 300 watt (I think) power supply The computer link: http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=dddwjb3&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&model_id=inspiron-620 (Just go to "review and check out" for the other specs etc.) Also, I would like a pretty good graphics card that I can rely on for moderate gaming such as playing Skyrim @ medium to high settings, and maxing out The Old Republic. I would like for it to cost around $120 not too much more. What kind of power supply would suit the graphics card too, a 500 watt? Be sure to include that please and thank you so much in advance.

Nice choice... with a Core i3 2310 processor, the Inspiron 620 MT is great for upgrading into a gaming rig. It's a regular minitower, so full-height graphics cards and standard ATX power supplies are usable. The main issue will be your budget. A decent 500W power supply costs between $50-$60.. does your $120 include the psu too? The best graphics card that wouldn't require a psu upgrade- a GDDR5 Radeon HD 6670. The official published requirements for the 6670 (and 5670) are inflated well above what those cards really use. Their maximum power draw is below 65 watts maximum, so they work fine on Dell's stock 300W power supply. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161397 Anything better than a 6670 requires upgrading your power supply. For a Radeon HD 6770 or GeForce GX 550 Ti, you'll need at least a good 450W power supply. The GTX 550 Ti even works fine with 400W psus, but it doesn't make sense to go below 450W when purchasing a new psu. Many people opt for 500-550W which can support cards a level higher. Here's a nice 450W power supply from Enermax (a quality brand): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817194090 With that, you could run either of these cards: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131434 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127573 These power supplies are even better: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371030 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151094 In addition to being higher wattage they also have dual PCI-E connectors, which is important if you're considering higher-end graphics cards. For example, the GeForce GTX 550 Ti only requires a single 6-pin connector, but the faster Radeon HD 6790 requires two. Same story for all cards above the $160 price point like the GeForce GTX 460/560, Radeon HD 6870, etc. Your most cost-effective choice is probably the Radeon HD 6770. The GTX 550 Ti is only 2-3% faster on average, making it hard to justify the higher cost. However, that MSI model I linked is an overclocked version with a big rebate- great deal if you don't mind spending $130 up front. But generally speaking, the GTX 550 Ti and Radeon HD 6790 are overpriced models. The HD 6770 offers almost equivalent performance to a GTX 550 Ti for $20 less. Meanwhile the HD 6850 is substantially better the HD 6790 for just $10 more. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161377 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161384 Performance: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-hd-6790-barts-gpu-geforce-gtx-460,2917-11.html http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Zotac/GeForce_GT_520/18.html
