Is zero-based indexing impossible?

Are there any downfalls to turning indexing off on your PC?

  • I have heard that turning off indexing (Right click on the HDD and unclick one of the box and press apply) speeds up your computer. It must be set that way as a default for some reason. Are there any downfalls to turning indexing off?

  • Answer:

If you use windows search it will be much slower than usual. But otherwise no ill effects.

Indexing optimises files and folders searching in Windows, making searching for stuff on your hard drives quicker. It soaks up a significant amount of system resources so I usually turn it off. The only real downside to turning off indexing is that it will slow down performance of the Windows search tool, the search options still work but will take longer to find things, which may be annoying if you like to use the seach tool a lot. If you don't use the the search tool bar in Windows much or at all, you won't miss the indexing feature and you will probably benefit more from turning it off for better system performance.

Indexing is only needed if you use windows search frequently, ie. daily. Otherwise, turn it off.
