What are usual maximum output frequencies on computer sound cards?

Hdmi on video cards and sound, separate processors?

  • I've always used video cards that output through vga or dvi. Many newer cards such as those based on the HD5450 have HDMI output. HDMI carries both sound and video. I've been told that such video cards have separate sound processors. Is this true? If yes, is there a way to configure such cards to send the same audio through the HDMI cable as your computer sends through the audio out of a sound card? Or does such a card require differerent audio output drivers that only feed through the hdmi.

  • Answer:

As long as you have the audio drivers installed for that card (usually they should be on the same driver CD as the video drivers) then you should just be able to set your default playback device in Windows to HDMI audio. This will divert all sound to your HDMI output instead of the soundcard.

Other answers

That's true, yes. When you install drivers for your video card (i.e. Catalyst drivers for AMD/ATI cards), it'll install drivers for the HDMI audio processor as well. All you then need to do is set the HDMI audio as the primary output device, and you'll then have audio via HDMI instead of your sound card.
