My computer won't recognize my SD card.

Why wont my computer recognize my 4 gig samsung micro SD card?

  • I run windows XP, and every time I plug in my adapter the computer either freezes or doesn't recognize it. My phone seems to recognize the card perfectly, and I have also bought several adapters to use with it, but none seem to work. what should I do?

  • Answer:

The most likely case for this problem is that your new memory card is a newer SDHC (SD High Capacity) card. You should be able to check the card's package to see if it says SDHC. If you've thrown out the package, try an online search. Both SD and SDHC are physically identical, but the newer SDHC cards are not compatible with older SD card readers. If you know for a fact that your card reader is only SD capable, you will most likely need to purchase a new card reader that supports the SDHC format. They cost as little as $10 USD at any local computer parts store. The new card reader will be able to read both older SD, as well as new SDHC, cards. Yeah, totally strange that it works fine that way! To make sure this SDHC thing is actual the issue, and not that the SD card is just broken, when you are at the local computer store, see if they have a computer running that they know is SDHC capable. Plug your card in that computer and see if it works. If it doesn't the SD card may be faulty. Try another known SDHC computer in the store to be sure. If it does work right away in that first store computer, it looks like a new SDHC capable card reader in your future. Good luck.
