Whats the lowest price a NEW GeForce 8800GT can be sold for brand new before it reaches its end of life cycle?
-
This is probably more of an economics question than anything. Whats the lowest price a manufacturer can sell a GeForce 8800 GT 512MB videocard and still make a decent profit before the series reaches its end-of-life cycle. Im tired of buying computer parts only to see it decline in price month-after-month after I purchase the part. How can one determine the point at which the part has reached its cheapest selling price. Does NVidia announce a products end-of-life cycle has arrived? Could waiting until the end-of-life cycle on a product to purchase it backfire and cause a surge in the price? Whats the cheapest, do you think, a GeForce 8800GT videocard can be manufacturered/sold for to yield a "reasonable" profit for the manufacturer? One last thing: I know I could wait 20 years and probably find a GeForce 8800GT in a dumpster somewhere but Im not "that" patient. Whats the lowest price point it can be bought for brand-new?

Answer:
Well as long as there is technology then the "leading edge" will always be costly. Then as long as the technology is selling then the price will stay high until newer tech comes out or the consumers are no longer buying the products. At that time prices drop until the sales pick up again. It don't matter what the card can be manufactured for.........it depends on the price the buying public will pay initially for the "new" technology. But the actual cost of MFGing a card from assembly lines in China or Japan are really cheap. The main cost is in engineering and design. Computer nerds are kinda like golfers......they have to have the newest technology they can get when in fact the "old" equipment will still work just fine.

it takes quite a while for cards to stop being made 'brand new' up to 6 years or so, dont keep waiting, just buy, you can wait forever but you still wont have what you want while you do, my general rule is One wait of about 3 months, then i go for it. Oh and i reckon $40 in a few years

buying and selling electronics is a very risky business , u got to have clients and people that u r sure that they will buy ur product cause there arent really that much extreme gamers out there . i bought an 8800gts 512 just a couple of months ago for 350 $$ now its being sold for even less then 250 $$ . if u buy something make sure u sell it quik and fast if u dont want to lose .

Impossible to say, as it is dependent on so many things such as competition, new hardware releases, market conditions, etc. As a general rule, simply wait 3-4 months after release, and the price will start coming down. Of course the price will continue to fall if you wait longer, but then you run the risk of buying a card which is being superceded by better hardware... and that will cost you more in the long run. By the way, if you are fed up of buying hardware that drops in price within months, then I suggest you find something else to do with your time. Technology is advancing so quickly that major price drops within a short period of time are inevitable.
