Is There A Way To Password A Portable Hard Drive?

I'm after a way of password protecting a usb pen drive?

  • Can I keep the software on the drive so I don't need to install the protection software on every pc I will be using the pen drive on

  • Answer:

USB Vault the Cyclone USB Vault is a powerful yet simple file encryption utility. It provides AES-128 bit encryption for your files, wherever they may go. AES or Advanced Encryption Standard gives you 3.4 x 1038 possible 128-bit keys. By comparison, the Digital Encryption Standard (DES) keys are only 56 bits long, which means there are approximately 7.2 x 1016 possible DES keys. Thus, there are about 1021 times more possible AES 128-bit keys than DES 56-bit keys. "Assuming that one could build a machine that could recover a DES key in a second, it would take that machine approximately 149 trillion years to crack a 128-bit AES key." The USB Vault software loads on the USB drive (flash drive, hard drive, or iPod) and stays with the USB drive. It does not require the install or uninstall of any files on any computer. Simply drag your files or folders to the USB Vault desktop icon. They will instantly be encrypted and transferred to the USB drive. Easy access for you, but not for strangers who don´t know your password. Just double click on the encrypted file, enter the password and it´s decrypted. Several files and folders can be quickly and simultaneously encrypted or decrypted back to the hard drive or any other connected drive.http://www.freewarefiles.com/program_17_245_17884.html

My usb flash drive has pw protection already on it. Sandisk makes them, and they're not too expensive.

You could just use EFS encryption on the files. Like the other answer just password the files. Some decent EFS freeware apps at www.tucows.com. Windows XP, Vista and 2000 all can utilize EFS without installing software. Link on how to setup: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457065.aspx

Depending on your operating system you can encrypt the files in XP... Just don't forget your password.
