Why won't my CD drive work?

Why wont my CD/DVD drive work?

  • Ok , so my cd/dvd drive has stopped working, obviously. The computer says there are errors when it tries to auto install it. Not only wont it read games , etc , but it wont read any disks anymore? Just because my comp. ( windows 7) is saying its having trouble installing it? also my hardrive disk drive has stopped working too , because of this. any computer wizzes out there? :/

  • Answer:

It could be an issue with the lens not reading the disks or inappropriate drivers. Run the tool available on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060 by clicking the ‘Fix it’ icon. The steps to manually troubleshoot the issue are also provided in the article below in case the tool doesn’t work (go to the registry and delete the filters). If it does not work, right click and uninstall the DVD ROM driver in the device manager (steps given further below) and restart the computer. The operating system would attempt to install the required driver automatically. If this does not happen, manually download and install the driver from the computer manufacturer’s website. If even replacing the driver does not fix it, get a technician to look for a hardware problem in the disk tray/lens. Hope it helped. Here’s to Good Karma - iYogi Active Response Team
