Installing Windows 7 without a DVD?

After installing Windows 7 I cannot use Dvd rom.?

  • I was with Windows Vista and I did a fresh install of Windows 7. Everything is working fine except my DVD rom. It is recognized by my system but it won't work. I cannot open the tray, nor will it read or burn cds or dvds. I tried some solutions I found online but nothing works. I am desperate for some help!

  • Answer:

I take it you can open the drive since you said it will not read so it is not a power issue 1. power down the system. 2. power up 3. try to get the drive to open by pressing the button 4. if that fails try inserting a paper clip into the little hole 5. if you have no issue opening the drive insert your windows 7 install dvd and boot to it 6. if it boots you have a ide or sata link to the mobo, if not check the cables If you can do all of the above there is nothing wrong with the drive, you will need to run this fix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982116 You can try the fix first. Update: Then it seems your drive is near death. Is this a desktop or a laptop? Desktop drives are cheap to replace. If the drive does not work right outside of windows it is not the update that is causing the problem. Try going into the bios and seeing if your system can even see the drive anymore. Also while in the bios try getting the drive to open
