How can I get music to play through 5.1 surround with logitech x-530 speakers?

• Music is only stereo so i only get music through 2 channels of my system I was wondering is there's someway to get "virtual" surround with the speakers whilst playing through itunes or WMP. I would prefer to avoid the AC3 filter as its just a pain in the ***. I am running vista and XP used to do it for me. I've done everything in the sound configuration in control panel. I'm at a loss as to where to turn now... Also my sound card is a cheap USB one off ebay but it seems to run all the speakers in the tests. The configuration software that came with it is a bit dodgy too so can I download the Creative software or something to configure them? Realtek doesn't seem to help either. The option to change the settings to 5.1 is greyed out and is selected as stereo. My system is a toshiba satellite A300 running vista Service pack 2. Help would be appreciated thanks!

  If you have a high-end sound card, like a Sound Blaster X-Fi, you can get it to "upmix" the stereo sound to surround sound. Some speakers also have a "virtual surround" option/button that upmixes stereo input to all the speakers. Otherwise, you're pretty much at the mercy of crappy software and audio drivers.
