How do you hook a MacBook up to a monitor?

I need to hook my macbook up to an external monitor.?

The screen on my macbook does not work but the rest of it functions properly. It is an early 2008 edition black macbook and i need to find the cable used to hook it up to an external monitor. THE MINI-DISPLAY PORT TO VGA DOES NOT FIT. The male connector end that goes in the computer is too small on the mini-display for to VGA, I need an older edition that will fit. I'm looking for an amazon or ebay link. Thanks for your help!
