If you accidentally scratched a CD?

Can attempting to copy a scratched audio cd ruin a cd/dvd burner?

  • I attepted to burn an audio cd which I had borrowed from a friend, without first checking the disc. When I put the cd into the drive, it began making much more noise than usual and would not read the disc at all. When hearing the noise, I quickly ejected the disc and noticed it was fairly scratched and ever since, the drive will not rcognise any discs at all, cd's or dvd's, including original discs. Is it possible for a scratched disc to ruin the drive? Is there anyway I can fix the problem? Any help would be much appreciated...the drive had been working perfectly until that point, it is now slower when opening the disc tray also, and the cd which I had tried to copy was working fine in my cd player

in my experience yes it can mess them up both physically and can sometimes scramble the firmware .. thats what i would try is finding a firmware update for it ..

NO. It might fail to copy but it wont screw your burner

Sounds like your DVD drive damaged the CD rather than the other way around.

re -Install your software if you can, if it play's on a cd player, and is ok, I have got around this problem even with new ones ,I get a green felt pen , on the edge of the cd mark in on the thin edge with the pen, the laser will still be able to copy what is on the disc , when you copy the cd , take it out put a new one in and see if this cd burner will reconize it. this is one way around it.

I reckon Robyn is right but the may have been a ton of dirt and grime on the cd which could mean that the drive just needs cleaning (you can get special CD's that can clean them)

Polishing with toothpaste works if you are only going to use it for one last time.
