Whats the average temperature for a graphics card when idle?

Whats decent graphics card should I get?

  • I am really wanting to play Arma II but unfortunately for me, my graphics card makes it run extremely slow. It lags like hell and takes me like 5 minutes to get from one side of the yard to the other side. I was looking at graphics card's but they were all like £400 and I can't afford that. I was hoping to spend £150 tops on a decent graphics card. What card would you guys recommend for me, so I can play Arma II very smoothly? Also, is there any requirements I need to install a certain graphics card? Wouldn't that just cost for me? PS: I am using Windows 7 if that makes a difference and I have Intel(R) HD Graphics Family currently. Any answers would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

hi mate £100 will get you a good graphics card that will run arma and most other recent pc games and one of the most popular cards in this price bracket is the "PowerColor AMD Radeon HD 7770 1024MB GDDR5 "( http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/atiradeongraphicscards/atihd7770series/ax77701gbd5-2dhg.html ) .. infact this card was only released last week and is as new as they come... and its specifications are impressive and these include a insane 1000mhz core clock ( yes 1ghz) and 1gb of gddr5 memory running at 4500mhz ddr effective .... theres 640 stream processors and a 128bit memory interface in terms of performance this will run arma 2 at maximum detail and resolution however theres a few things to check before purchasing this card and these are : 1) your motherboard needs a pci-express x16 bus ( slot ) 2) your power supply needs to be 500w or better with 35A or more on the +12v rails 3) your case needs to physically accomodate the card ( size ect ) as long as you pass these requirements then your good to go.... just pay special attention to the power requirements...not enough power especially the amps on the +12v rails and your card will have problems on the nvidia side of things and considering your budget the card that springs to mind is the "Novatech GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1024MB GDDR5 "( http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/nvidiageforcegraphicscards/nvidiagtx550tifermiseries/nov-550.html ) ... this is a powerful card for the price and also has some impressive specs... these include a 900mhz core clock and 1gb of gddr5 memory running at 4100mhz effective..... theres also 192 stream processors each running at 1800mhz and with a 192bit memory interface this will have no problems running arma 2 and other popular games.. again the above requirements i noted apply to this card aswell and the power requirements are exactly the same..... so again make sure you have these requirements in place before buying this or the above HD7770 card... you can easily upgrade your ram ( memory ) aswell.. however before this you should visit http://www.crucial.com/uk/ and run the Crucial System Scanner Tool ... this will let you know the exact type, speed and size of memory your pc requires and will also give you a list of compatible memory upgrades to buy ....... you can buy directly from crucial or note down the type of ram you need to buy and get it from another retailer such as novatech, aria or ebuyer i hope this helps...any questions let me know good luck mate !

Okay, well, I'm going to assume you have a "PCI-e (x16)" slot on your motherboard, but that sounds a bit technical, so excuse me if I dumb it down, just wanted to make sure you understand, not trying to patronise! http://quicktiming.org/wp-content/woo_custom/30-pcie.jpg in the picture above you should see the slots, the one we are interested in is labelled PCI-E, its the longest yellow one with a clip on the right hand side. open up your PC to see if you have one of those, got one? great! (if not, sorry, but you need a new motherboard) While your inside your computer, you'll need to see how powerful your power supply (PSU) is, read the sticker on the side of it (it's usually in the top left corner of your case, you plug the wall power cable into it, and it has LOTS of wires coming out of it) you'll want to make sure it's about 450W to 500W, most standard machines ship with 300W/330W, especially if they're from Dell or HP, odds are you'll probably need to upgrade this, oh, and don't spend less that £50 on one of these bad boys, or you run a risk of getting a power spike or other nasty things that could ruin your pc, I mean, you can, it might work, but I'm running quite an expensive PC, and the last thing I want is for my PSU to short out and fry a few hundred quid's worth of components. Okay, so lets assume you have a 500W PSU already, (if not, there are a ton of youtube videos showing you how to install one) you're now ready to look at a card. I saw that your a UK Y!a asker, so you should be using the following sites to look: www.ebuyer.com www.aria.co,uk www.scan.co.uk www.ebay.co.uk www.overclockers.co.uk (I like ebuyer myself) First big question is - Nvidea or ATI (well, it's actually AMD now...) Nvidea are like, the more upmarket gpu's (graphics cards) they are like the pedigree, refined, and even if they are cheap just smooth and nice. (oh, and they have PhysX - youtube it, its for curtains and glass shattering, very pretty indeed) ATI are like, the "bang for your buck" gpus, they run a little hotter but you usually get a bit more grunt out of them for a little less cash (I use these, but I have a processor by the same company, so they work better together - AMD) If you want an Nvidea, may I suggest this: http://www.ebuyer.com/254405-asus-gtx-560ti-directcu-ii-1gb-gddr5-dual-dvi-mini-hdmi-pci-e-engtx560-ti-dcii-2di-1gd5 ###OR### http://www.ebuyer.com/242226-kfa2-gtx-460-ex-oc-edition-1gb-gddr5-dual-dvi-mini-hdmi-60xfh6hs3gxl If you want ATI/AMD, may I suggest this: http://www.ebuyer.com/340795-powercolor-hd-6870-battlefield-3-edition-1gb-gddr5-dual-dvi-dual-mini-ax6870-1gbd5-pp2dhg2 ##OR## http://www.ebuyer.com/319993-powercolor-hd-6850-graphics-card-ax6850-1gbd5-i2dhg I hope this essay helps you :) if you have any issues -- get back to me :D

Like others already said here, YOU CANNOT UPGRADE GRAPHICS ON A LAPTOP! For a desktop computer ONLY: As long as your computer motherboard has a PCI-e x 16 slot and you have (or upgrade to) a big enough power supply any graphics card would work, they are no compatibility issues per say. Having an old or obsolete processor and under 2GB of RAM would create a bottleneck in your system, thus not allowing you the full benefits of a powerful new graphics card. What you should have in mind is how much you can spend for a graphics card (and bigger power supply, most likely) and what are you uses and performance requests that you expect from your computer graphics (gaming - what game and how demanding it is, photo and video editing, etc). For your £150 budget I recommend an nVidia GeForce GTX 460 Fermi ($150 USD - £95 GBP in the USA) or nVidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti ($240 USD - £151.59 GBP in the USA). They both require at least a good quality (brand name) 500 watts or bigger power supply, so if yours is smaller you would need to upgrade that too, buy an 80plus certified power supply from a good brand like Thermaltake, Enermax, Cooler Master, Antech, OCZ or Corsair. GTX 560 Ti is one of the best graphics card, surpassed only by the very expensive GTX 570 and GTX 580 ($350 to over $700 in the USA) They sell them on amazon.co.uk, look for one there. Here they are, I found them for you: GTX 460 for £120.38: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Palit-NVIDIA-GeForce-Technology-Graphics/dp/B005JRZV58/ref=sr_1_26?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1329652551&sr=1-26 GTX 560 Ti for £159.99: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asus-GeForce-DirectCU-Graphics-Express/dp/B005G50ERI/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1329652238&sr=8-4

Hi here we have certain issues which need to be addressed one if this is a laptop then you can't change the graphics anything. what is installed in this laptop is part of the motherboard as you are stuck with it. now the next issue this lagging thing several issues but the main one is lack of Ram as this what takes the data from the hard drive to the processor and if there is not enough it will be slow period. so upgrade the amount of Ram that is the first thing it will speed everything up. then we have the worst one of all the broadband connection which is what causes most on line issues. so many of the internet service providers have over sold there product that a slow download is the what most have so you only get what you pay for cheap it will be slow only fit for e mail. so now you know an increase in Ram will resolve most issues but not all.
