Answer:
an external hard drive is simply a hard drive which plugs into your computers usb port and enables you to have another hard drive on your computer without opening it up and installing one. These are good for backing up files such as music or photos or anything you are afraid of losing on your computer. You can install games onto them and you can switch them between your pc and laptop.

An external hard drive is for storage space, not memory. Memory (also called RAM) is volatile storage that is deleted every time you reboot, if you're running out of memory, you have too many programs in start up and should Google "Cleaning up Start up" or ask here how to do it. If you're running out storage, an external hard drive is for you. I would not recommend running games off an external hard drive because it will increase loading time and cause lag depending on how much of the game is run off the hard drive. You can run things like Office, IM Software, Music, and Movies off an external with little difficulty.

it sounds as though you have a pretty small hard drive. An external Hard drive acts like a huge usb memory card...ie you can save loads and loads of stuff on it. It depends on how big your games are as well. for example, if it is 100mb, then a 60gb HD will hold 600 games!!

its just for extra space but you can put your files onto that to have more internal memory. External: out side Internal: Inside

You can copy your current operating system with an external hard drive even with all the programs you have installed on it...its an ideal back-up
its basically a big flash drive with the same amount of memory a computer would have inside it. As for the games, you will probably have to reinstall it and make sure that when you install you save it to the external hard drive.

wait if you said that it sound s like it is taking off, this is bad that is you fan over powering or it has something is pushing up aginst it, so you should take it to "best buy"* and have them look at that (*or any other pc repair shop) :)

In response to EtherBoo "An external hard drive is for storage space, not memory", technically correct, however, telling your computer to use you free hard-drive space as virtual RAM will speed up your computer somewhat. The basic Windows setting is limited and is very easy to change. I recommend changing it to at least 1.5 times that of your normal RAM, and upping the virtual RAM setting likewise
