How can/does a mobile phone provide power to pen drive?

How to provide power supply to an external hard drive (2.5")?

  • I wanna diy a power supply for a 2.5" hard drive for connecting it to my Samsung Galaxy tablet 10.1.I have a USB cable that come with the enclosure with 1 USB plug at one end and 2 at the other end. I need to format the hard drive with FAT 32 format and to provide 5V DC power to the HD as obviously, the tablet will not provide the power for it. I have in hand a cell phone charger with 5 V 2.5A output which I think will be suitable for the purpose. I need advices as to how it should be wired correctly. Any inputs are very much apprecited

  • Answer:

Just purchase a 2 1/2 case with power supply. The price of case is less than $5 then you will not to make a power supply work with hard drive. Make note the type of hard drive. Is the drive IDE or Sata? You can purchase a case to match the connections on hard drive.
