How To Mirror Files?

Mirror external hard drive and bootable?

  • I have my old laptop hard drive in an enclosure so now it is an USB external hard drive. It is the same size of my internal hard drive. I would like to make it bootable and an exact copy of my internal hard drive incase of a hard drive failure. Any good free sofware anyone could reccomend to mirror? How would it work? Also would like to use the external drive at the same time to save additional MS Word files to it. Do I need to do a FDISK to create a partion after the mirroring is done?

  • Answer:

I use a free program called Clonezilla to clone my laptop hard drive onto an external USB drive. It should automatically partition and format the drive for cloning. You just download the Clonezilla disc image file and burn into onto a CD, and when you restart your computer it should boot from the CD. It works great and it's pretty fast too. I usually clone my hard drive about once a week as a backup.
