How can I fix my corrupted USB drive?

USB hard drive problem?

  • okay I have a small 80 gig usb HDD and some how some files I put on there got corrupted they show up as being there but I can't move them delete them or anything there using up space and causing problems what can I do to fix this is there a free software I can use to format and will formating make the drive unusable I really need to fix this problem any help would be great

    I would recommend running ScanDisk, which the person above failed to mention. It is on the Start Menu under Programs, Accessories, System Tools. Your files might be corrupted beyond recovery, though... hope it works out! Remember, always safely remove USB storage devices by using the icon in the system tray. Unplugging the device without following this procedure may not harm anything if no files were open or being written, but if they were, you run the risk of losing data or corrupting the files. If I had to guess, I would say this is what happened to your disc.

First, check your connections. Next, run a virus scan on that drive. Third, you can format the drive from My Computer. Fourth, if none of the above work then it's fried (i.e. buy a new one.)

You can still use the drive even after its been formatted, because I have a 80 gig usb HDD too. Formating it should delete those files, just make sure you move any files you need off the hard drive.

With windows, if you right-click on the drive there will be an option to format it. If you use something else or if formatting doesn't fix it (or if you want more advanced formatting options), you can repartition and format it with parted magic. http://partedmagic.com/ (by the way, formatting a drive deletes everything on it, and repartitioning will frequently require deleting everything on it)
