  • I am trying to install UBUNTU 11.10 in my laptop. it has got three partitions 234/310 (C) for w7 and 13.6 (D) for recovery and E 248/272...but i cannot install ubuntu using partition method as i am a bit confused and afraid of the datas getting earesed and the option install along with windows doesnot come in the installer... plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz help..

  • Answer:

If you want to install Ubuntu inside the Windows OS partition then you MUST install it using the WUBI option so they can share the same partition. The WUBI program is in the installer. Check again using your Windows Explorer. If you don't want that option, you need to create a separate partition for Ubuntu. This can be done by unallocating a portion of your drive C or E so you can have a new partition say drive F. A 30GB partition will be good enough. Use this free program to create the new partition: http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm

It's not very clear from your question what sizes the partitions are. If you don't have the option to install beside Windows then pick the Install Manual or Install Other option, and resize one of your existing partitions to make room for a Linux partition. Freeing around 20GB should be enough for an Ubuntu install. The Advanced mode of the Ubuntu installer will resize Windows partitions without losing data, but it can take a long time because it does a lot of error checking to make sure no data is lost. It sounds like your laptop has an OEM version of Windows 7 - which means all the recovery data is on the HD and you don't have a recovery DVD. If that's the case and you're not comfortable with repartitioning then you're probably best sticking with Win7. Ubuntu is a fun thing to try but it's not really a good alternative to Windows yet.

You will have to install it to some partition, unless you wish to use the Live CD. Why not use Partition E? Just copy your files over to C if you are worried, and when Ubuntu asks what partition, just give them E to install. That is what I would do, but if you are not computer savvy, maybe you should not go that route. There is method of installing the Live CD to a USB drive, and using it that way, but of course it will still not be installed to your hard drive. I suggest you get another hard drive and install Ubuntu on that. That would take care of all your worries.

Just download it onto a Flash Drive and press "F7" or whatever your hotkey is for startup and select Ubuntu as the OS instead of Windows. .. so your not actually downloading it onto your computer and have something bad happen to Windows if you mess something up. ,.
