How do I add graphics to a video?

Can I add a video card to my system even though I have an integrated Intel HD Graphics chip?

  • Running a Dell Inspiron 580. Got the PC for the family but would like to run some games for myself. The Intel HD Graphics are decent but not powerful enough to run the better games. Will I run into lots of issues trying to install a new video card on this integrated chip? Or will it be as simple as dropping in a new card? I'm a MAC guy and this if my first PC. Any help would be great! Thanks

    Presuming that your motherboard has a PCI Express x16 slot, all you do is install the new card. Be aware though that there is a 99% chance you will also have to upgrade your power supply in order to power the new card. Manufactured computers come with PSUs that are lower end usually and are designed to only barely power what your system came with and very little power is needed to run your current integrated Intel GMA

Yes. You can but you should uninstall the integrated drivers before you install the card. Sometimes when you install a graphics card it may conflict with the integrated drivers, so I would disable the integrated graphics after you install the card. Also if you upgrade to a power hungry graphics card, you will have to buy a new Power supply. http://www.dell.com/ca/p/inspiron-580/pd if this is your computer, what graphics card will you get?

Sure, though make sure to see if you have the proper slot for the vid card. And it's possible you might have to disable the integrated graphics in BIOS (but that's not hard, and many motherboards have an "auto" feature).

Yes you usually can, if and only if, the power supply is large enough to run the video card you wish to install....

Toss in a video card and let 'er go. The only thing you need to worry about is your power supply and how much juice a new card will eat.
