How do I fix a corrupted flash drive?

What is wrong with my 32GB USB flash drive and how can I fix it?

  • I have a USB memory stick flash drive which has a 32GB capacity. I am able to load it full of movies and TV shows until it's close to full. Then, when I try to play the movies or TV shows, only some of it works. I would say that only around 7 or 8GB's worth of material works, the rest are either empty folders or folders full of corrupted files which are named with squares and shapes instead of words. The drive shows up in any computer, but with the same problem. I am never asked to format it. I have used my Disk Management program to format it again, and it tells me the drive is healthy and 32GB's in size, yet the same thing happens every time I try to put movies or TV shows on it. Can anyone tell me how to fix it and what might be wrong?

  • Answer:

fake or dodgy drive. fake drives are on sale so much, the higher the capacity the more fake drives there are. they get a 2, 4 or 8GB flash drive, change the firmware data to read 32, 64 or 128GB and then sell it on somewhere like ebay. when you get it and plug it in, it will say the advertised size that they have sold it as. but when you fill it the drive will currupt and cause this sort of problem. Frist start by wiping the drive clean, Formatting will result in an error, so just delete the contents, then use this H2Testw http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/H2testw.shtml use that on the drive, it will fill the drive with the 32GB it says, and then check the data, if there are any errors then you have a fake drive. Edit_ even big sellers can have fake drives. i got a few off of 100% feedback sellers, the only way to know is to test it, they may not know that there products are fake. and most people dont even realise untill they try to fill the whole drive. run the program i linked to and do a write and verify test on the drive. not being able to format the drive into a diffrent file system is also a indication that it's a fake drive.

How big are the movie files, if they are more than 4gb the drive should be formatted to ntfs rather than fat as fat cant handle the size, also how old is it as they degrade with use.
