I am trying to move all the files from a dell laptop to a compaq computer that is out of memory...help?
-
I have a Compaq computer that is about 5 years old and it is out of disk space. I bought a hard drive by Simple Tech called the Black Cherry with 320 GB for more memory. I also have to move all of the files from a Dell laptop that has to be returned to my mom's old workplace and put them on this hard drive. It seems that this hard drive I bought is primarily used for back up. How do I use is to free up memory on my Compaq and be able to access the files?

Answer:
Use the ccleaner program on the compaq to free up space. If there are music files and/or videos on the compaq and you want to keep them...copy them to the black cherry drive and remove them from the internal drive. go to control panel/add remove programs uninstall any programs you don't use any more.

First there is no memory on a hard drive. Storage yes, memory no. Data can easily be moved to the new drive but the registry is not located there. So unless the software install was done originally to the new drive you just can not simply move the software there. See the below link for a tool to help you out.

Get a new internal hardrive for you compaq, install us a slave=secondary drive, them run their software to format the new drive and they allow you to clone the old drive, when it is done, they ask you to shutdowm and change the order of the hds new one first and old last, read the instructions because you has to change the order of the pins in the drives that have 3 settings Master,Slave,Cable select. Them copy the files you want to recover from your laptop, into a CD,DVD or pendrive and plug it in the Compaq and download you files.

there are a couple of different ways to handle this. The first is to go through the hard drive in question and look at all of the programs on it. Delete all that you do not need, then go into "my computer" right click the drive, go to "properties" then click on Disk Cleanup, wait for it to run, check mark all of the boxes and click ok, but you can also click on the "more options tab first and go to the box for erasing all but the most recent restore point and erase those old restore points. All of this should get you back the needed space, you may also try defragmenting the drive as well, this may get you back some space too, as well as compressing the drive. But option two is much simpler and easier, but a little more expensive but alot less time consuming. You can purchase a small external hard drive, they have them from 120 GB to 1TB in memory size, they plug into a usb port and then you can copy all the files onto this drive and then you would be able to use it on any computer with a usb port and would then also have a backup for it as well. Hope this helped, good luck to you.
