How do I get my microphone to work on my dell laptop?

  • Last year I used a head set microphone to talk to people through Instant Messenger. Now when I plug in the microphone and do the whole talk thing, it won't work. i am wondering why. Do I need hardware for this to work? If so, what kind?

  • Answer:

In most cases, you don't need to download a driver for your microphone unless if it is something very unique brand. When you plugged in your microphone, your PC will automatically find the correct driver for you and ask whether you want to install it. You might have disregarded that message you might want to right click My Computer -> Hardware Tab -> Device Manager -> then scan for hardware changes with your microphone plugged in.

Should just work if your computer has standard Audio Card. Should have a standard Audio Input on the front of the back of the Laptop! Might be settings which is causing it not to work try using the Windows Sound Recorder to record yourself abit to test if you can get it working. Try also looking if the Mic is set to mute in the Audio Settings in Control Panel! Hope this helped!
