Can I just out any video card in my computer?

My computer have 32mb internal video, can i upgrade with an 8mb video card?

  • not for gaming, just internet, and watching movies... its an older system, and i checked and it use intel 8180 video card(built in to mother board) with 32mb ram, and the card i was going to get was an ati rage xl, with 8mb ram... and use the card instead, and disable the internal video. my theory is that the computer would run better with the video card installed even thought its 8mb instead of 32? am i right??

  • Answer:

Well since you have said you'd never use it for gaming. then it will be ok to use the Rage XL. Theoretically using the 8MB card could still be faster, because onboard video card uses up RAM in your computer, so if your computer has few amount of RAM (Say 128MB or lower) then it is really suggested to use the 8MB video card since any lower than 128MB RAM could affect Windows performance severely.
