Why my dvd rw wont burn on dvd's?

My DVD-RW will not read or burn DVDs, but will for CDs. What's the problem?

  • Up until around two weeks ago, my DVD-RW was writing a DVD with Nero 7, and stopped working during the writing. After a restart, the drive no longer reads or burns blank DVDs, but can still read old CDs, and burn new blank ones. I have reinstalled the drivers, to no effect, yet Windows recognises the drive for what it is, i.e. a DVD-RW drive. It states in the hardware as being HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GCA-4080N. DVD cleaning kits have also proved unsuccessful. Any help on getting the drive to read and burn DVDs again would be greatly appreciated.

  • Answer:

It sounds like it is malfunctioning and you need a new one.

Try to restore your computer to previous date when it was working fine, it it did not work , buy a new one.

I would say that you need to update the driver for the device. If you find the device via the 'My Computer' option, check properties and update the driver..

Try a firmware update.
