Can you partition a drive without erasing data?

How can I partition my external HDD (FOR FREE!) without erasing its contents?

  • Hi! I have a 500GB external hard drive but I want to split it into 2 partitions. I'll use 1 for my actual backup while the other one for my Time Machine backups in Mac OSX. The problem is I already have 143GB worth of data stored into it. I can't load everything onto my Macbook because it only has 120GB max capacity, and only about 40GB is free. What do I do? How can I partition it without erasing all my data as well as spending anything? Thanks for any help!

  • Answer:

When you are partitioning hard drives it is recommended to backup your data which is stored to it (in case of power failure the data may be gone forever). If you have no space to backup you data you can risk a disk partitioning, try to use a good software like Partition Magic, Paragon Partition Manager or Acronis Disk Director. Best luck.
