Is there a way to add (not swap) a full internal hard drive to my computer?
-
First thing's first, I am desperate for space on my computer. My files are crammed like sardines, and God forbid I should want to download a podcast. So today I was rooting around in my brother's junk bin, when LO AND BEHOLD! I find a working computer! She's ancient (Installed with Windows 98 she boasts!) and really only good for scrapping parts. I'm not exactly sure of the size of the hard drive, but even squeezing 10 gigs out would make me immensely happy. Is there any way that I could connect this to my computer internally, or maybe make a casing for it and use it as an external hard drive?

Answer:
yes, you can do both. by attatching it internally, you will need to slide it into the drive bays where the othe rhard drive is. now they are neighbors! Seocnd you will need to take the old ribbon cable that the drive was hooked up with and connect one end to the hard drive and another end ot your mothebroard. screw the old old drive down to the case where the holes on the hard drive align with the holes in the cage. You may only be able to access one side, this is fine. put a big white four pin power connector on and oyu are in buisness. run the diskmanagement program in windows to format the old drive and get it up and running. And expternal drive may or may not be plug and play. you can get and IDE ENCLOSURE kit from a site like http://www.newegg.com They are good people. plus the kit will come with step by step instructions on how to get what you want, an external drive installe don your computer. Hope this does it for you

Yes you can connect it inside. If you want it as an external drive, there are hard disk enclosures that are for sale. It has its own power supply and its connected to your PC via USB.

I'm so glad you asked this question, I've wondered the same thing, too. So I sent your question to two computer people that will probably know the answer. Thanks again for posting this question.

Depending on the slots available in your case & your mother board set up yes. Also you could put it in a casing made for such as an external hard drive a safer place in my mind to store files. Check Tiger Direct & Comp. USA (should have said or as they are sisters) for a cheap hard drive encloser. But either is possable.
