How do I get/work a web cam?

So boyfriend is leaving for college in a few days. I'm trying to figure out this web cam thing so we can video chat. I have a HP pavillion and there is a little web cam camera at the top of my screen. The problem is, I don't know how to access it. Do I download a certain program? I heard you can do web cam through AOL Instant Messenger...how do you get that? Is there a certain application you download? If so..what is it? Also I don't think I have a microphone...ah I'm just not web cam savvy...how do I get it to work? What program do I use? Is there something to open on my computer? Where would I find it?
