What's the difference between Installed Physical Memory and Total Physical Memory?

  • I am using Windows Vista Home Premium. I recently upgraded my HPdv6000 laptop RAM from 1GB to 3 GB. Now when I click Computer>System Properties, the memory (RAM) shows 3.00 GB. However, when I open Task Manager>Performance, I can see that the total physical memory is only 1022 MB. Why is this so? Also, when I view the System Information, I get the following: Installed Physical Memory (RAM): 3.00 GB Total Physical Memory: 1.00 GB Available Physical Memory: 373 MB Total Virtual Memory: 2.25 GB Available Virtual Memory: 1.29 GB Now my question is: Why is the Installed Physical Memory (3GB)different from the Total Physical Memory (1 GB)? Is Windows able to utilize all 3 GB memory, or is it still limited to 1 GB? If so, why?

  • Answer:

That's weird... Vista may need to update it's virtual memory/paging file settings now that you've installed more RAM, but physical memory shouldn't still be reported as 1gb, if the additional RAM was recognized. Is something really bizzare going on, like a 2gb RAM disk being created before Vista loads?
