Computer Goes Slow. What Can I Upgrade Or Change To Make It Go Faster?
-
I have a custom built computer with a Celeron D 2.27 ghz processer, 1 gb ram, and a $30 nvidia video card. Each of these components can be upgraded, which one would help it go faster?

Answer:
You did not mention the O/S or the disk drive, nor what sort of applications you are riunning. 1 GB is fine for WinXP, but not nearly enough for Vista. 2.27GhZ should do for most things. If you used a small 5400 rpm disk drive, you might see better performance with a 7200 rp, or even 10,000 rpm if you are doing disk intensive things. If you are gaming, major improvements will result from upgrading your graphics card.

That computer shouldn't run slow all. You could probably make it run twice as fast without adding any extra parts just by setting up the operating system right. Unless your running Windows Vista. Then add a gig or two of ram to it, and a DirectX 10 compatible video card. Then it should fly at least for a couple months.

When is your computer going slow? If it is going slow get a better video card Is it running slow when your running 2 or 3 programs ? then upgrade your ram but this most likely isn't the case because you've got 1 gig of ram which is a good amount unless you've got vista. If you have vista you might consider getting more ram and a better processor. Is it just generally slow? slow startup slow everything you've just outgrown it ? Upgrade your processor Do you look at a lot of porn ? then download some spyware removers

Most obvious answer is to check your "msconfig" settings to disable any background programs hogging ram. Go to start menu - run - type in msconfig - choose selective startup - and disable any programs you don't need --- but be careful --- some may be necessary even if you don't recognize them. You can always go back in and change each programs status if your computer freezes up.

If you're want it to run as fast as when you bought it, save your data to a disk, and then format (erase) your hard drive and reinstall the operating system from original CD's, getting rid of all the junk, malware, etc, that's been accumulated. Then when you install or reinstall anything, always choose 'custom' and not 'typical' install. Typical means that it's okay for them to put all extra 'junk' on that you don't want, like toolbars, weather bugs, etc.. If you want it faster than when you first took it out of the box, add more RAM and a faster video card, but still do above. . .
