What kind of mufflers sound the best?

How do I get a good exhaust sound out of a '99 Impreza 2.2L?

  • I have a '99 Subaru Impreza with a 2.2L 142hp engine. The mufflers kind of rusty and I've thinking about getting a new one. I want to get a cool deep sound, but not something loud like some idiots do! It's a subaru so its got a boxer engine which I'm not sure if it can give a deep sound or not. Thanks

    I have an 02 WRX and i wanted to get an SPT exhaust. (Made by bosal) I know what you mean about loudness. I like something full but not too loud that you can't drive through a parking garage without scarring people. i would suggest a borla catback..possible even a greddy or hks.. i would say that any subaru with an exhaust is going to be a nice deep but sometimes throaty sound.. if you didnt want to spend a whole bunch find a tip off ebay and take it to your local muffler shop. just have it welded on.. ive heard a couple with the muffler cut of and a can coming out of the back.. sorry if i didnt help at all.. if i find something that is extraordinary ill let you know. No no no! Go with Borla Headers and a regular cat back. It will sound super beefy but won't be stupid loud. A WRX turbo does not produce the same sound as a 2.2 NA block. I had a stupid N1 and ripped it off in a week. Sorry man, don't mean to knock on your N1.

Go for the Borla cat back exhaust, catless DP. you will be happy. i know couse that's what i had on my 02 wrx. i no longer have the borla, i went with the apexi n1 couse its Lauder and i like the way the chrome can looks.

Go with a cat back, bolt on exhaust system. Quick, easy, can be put on in the driveway in no time. Will make a great difference in the tone. Most performance cat back systems eliminate the stock resonator, which i highly recommend. Without the resonator and with a performance muffler, you will get the sound you are looking for. I removed the 3rd cat, the resonator, and replaced the stock muffler with a purple hornie glass pack muffler on my 00 outback and i love it. That may be too loud for you liking though...... good luck...
