What chains for a Subaru Forester?
-
My mom bought a Subaru Forester this summer, (not sure what model, but it's new, not used, so it's probably this year's) and she recently discovered that there is a problem... you're not technically supposed to put chains on it. In the owner's manual it says 2 different things: one page says you can put cable chains on it, and one page says you should never put chains on it at all. Well she doesn't want to get cable chains because they break, she wants real chains that she can use reliably. She went to the place she bought it and they insisted she didn't need chains, the 4-wheel drive was good enough without them. (Or something, some BS like that.) But she does a lot of hiking and volunteering in the mountains and the park has signs all over that say all vehicles must be carrying chains in winter. So what is she supposed to do, keep chains in her car even though she can't put them on her tires? And what if she actually, you know, needs to put them on her tires? (Because, come on, 4WD is great but it can't do miracles.) She got this thing because it was supposed to be a good vehicle for harsh weather and wildernessy areas. (And by the way, we LIVE in a wildernessy area. Sometimes in winter we have to put chains on just to get down off our hill, not to mention back up it.) She never suspected when she bought it that it would be chain-incompatible. So right now we're thinking "f*ck it, we're going to put chains on it anyway". So: a. What kind of chains should she get? b. Do we need to modify the car in any way to make them work better? c. Anything else?? Thanks. D:

Answer:
What are you doing that requires chains on a subaru? Chains are for some serious stuff... A set of studded winter tires will work better on a subaru than any chains.. Yeah you can but chains on it but you have to put them on right.. drop the air pressure in each tire by about 10lbs install the chains then inflate the tires to proper pressure.. if you dont the chains WILL come off and damage the entire side of the car.. These sets you see people put on on the side on the canyon are just cheapy ones made to make you feel all warm and fuzzy.. I would say start with old school studded tires then see if you need chains.. a subaru is AWESOME in bad weather I live in Utah where the highway patrol will block the canyons and inspect the cars as they go up I have gone more places in the "bu" than most trucks I have more control you just have to drive it right and pay attention to your situations.

Why not buy some proper winter tires for it (or Nokian WR G2's) and then you do not have to worry about chains.

Chains on a Subaru?!?! BAH! That's ridiculous! It's a Subaru! Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIDe6kW7GeA
You are wasting your time putting chains on a Subaru. The all wheel drive system is good enough that you will never need them. Besides not needing them, you will ruin the AWD system by putting them on. If you think you need better traction, buy 4 snow tires to put on all wheels. All tires must match at all times or again you could run the risk of ruining the AWD system. I have climbed snowy hills in my Subaru with all weather tires that 4wd vehicles could not climb. Drop it into a lower gear to get down, and use 2nd or 3rd to climb back up. If you need anything other than snow tires on a Subaru, then you need a tank instead of a car.
