What's the difference between closed deck and open deck?

Open deck.I've heard that these are 1.8 and 2.2 Closed deck. Heard it's for the 2.5 But what do they mean?

Open deck found in early Impreza'a and 2 liter WRX's. http://www.iwsti.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=13203&stc=1&d=1230012399 Semi Closed Deck found on most 2.5 liter WRX'STI's and the JDM 2 liter STI's http://www.iwsti.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=13204&stc=1&d=1230012399 Closed deck I believe was only used on the 2.2 liter Turbo engines. http://www.iwsti.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=13205&stc=1&d=1230012399 Basically the different re-enforcements at the top of the block around the cylinder walls.
