JVC Everio GZ-HM440 OR Everio GZ-HD300?
-
Hello, I am in the market of buying a camcorder. Basically I want a 1080p camera (with manual focus) that's around $300-400. I'm going to use it for filming movies. I've narrowed it down to 2 choices. JVC Everio GZ-HM440 OR Everio GZ-HD300. The first one is $300 and the second one is $340, which I found a great deal on. My question is, which one should I choose? The HD300 is normally around $500 so obiously it would seem nicer than the first one, but I've seen proffesional reviews on it that say it sucks, although I can't find any reviews on the first one (becides YouTube ones from people who bought it, which they said it was good) What do you guys think?

Answer:
JVC Everio GZ-HM440 an attractive buy relative to their SD competitors, but inexpensive doesn't necessarily mean easy. Our most recent tally indicates there are no fewer than four possible media types to use, each of which can support multiple encoding formats; the encoding formats, in turn, support various combinations of standard-definition (SD) and high-definition (HD) video formats. Toss in HD's three different available resolutions, and you have an ugly mess to sort through while you shop. And we haven't even begun to see the inevitable models based on HD-DVD or Blu-ray discs. g

While it has an appealing form factor and design, the JVC Everio GZ-HD300 is still rather expensive for what you get from it. JVC should be lauded for their advancements here, particularly when it comes to optical zoom, and despite its flaws, their attempts at liven up the interface. That said, the overall video quality did not blow me away, and it would be difficult to justify spending nearly $700 on a camcorder whose performance is only marginally better than cheaper, standard-definition models. If you're looking for truly stunning 1080p HD, you'll need to drop at least twice as much cash. If you're on a budget, stick to standard-definition.
