How can you get a mini Dv camcorder onto your computer?

  • I got a mini Dv camcorder for christmas and I don't know how to get it from the tape to my computer. Can you buy something that you put your tape into and into records off onto a CD? Or whatever I am not very sure!

    You need to check if your camcorder has a firewire interface. If so you will need to have a firewire card installed on your PC/laptop and connect these both together using a firewire cable. You then can capture the video to your PC using some software - free from here http://windv.mourek.cz/ Beware capturing the file can result in some large files This will only create an .AVI file on your PC , which you will need to convert to DVD before you can burn it to a DVD - Can't find any free software to do this at the moment, but I use http://www.dvdsanta.com/ more info here - http://www.goripper.com/minidv-to-dvd.html EDIT - found some free software here http://www.sothinkmedia.com/movie-dvd-maker/download.htm to convert the .AVI file to DVD - I've never tried it so can't comment if this is any good Update 2 - Darling - you camcorder has the firewire interface (IEEE1394 out) so you just need to check your PC

If you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorder…. Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder. Make sure your camera is in playback mode. The fine print in your manual makes reference to firewire (ieee 1394) connection.

Your Mini DV camera comes equipped with a fire wire connection (1394), all you do is plug one end into the camera, and the other into your computer. Your computer should have a capture card with video editing software, so you can edit the video footage. You may need to purchase a fire wire (1394) cord, from your local Best Buys, Circuit City, or Radio Shack, if you don't have one.

i have the same problem, mine is a canon mini DV i know u need some sort of USB cord that u hook up one end to the camera and one end to the computer but i have no clue which one to get and how to use it!!!! help us someone!!
