How do you compress a home video?

Video compression help?

  • I have recently imported all of our home video tapes onto the computer using adobe premiere elements. I have put on 6 tapes and they take up over 70GB of our hard drive space!!! How can i compress these videos to make them smaller files please help

  • Answer:

You will have to use a software to compress the file. These softwares will either convert the file to another format having lesser bitrate so that it uses less disk space or it will record the video again. Ashampoo Movie Shrink & Burn http://www.gold-software.com/download5086.html VideoMan VideoMan 3.0 is a complete new version with capability to import-export video from DV cameras, and use modern video compression formats. With compressing you will lose quality. Can you burn them to a rewritable DVD disk?

The problems you'll run into if you compress the files are that you'll reduce the quality and make editing more difficult. A lot of people have a large, possibly removable, drive just for their video. If that's not an option you may be better off leaving the video on tape until you need to edit it - 6 hours is a lot to work with.
