What resolution would be best for me?

What is the best camera resolution?

  • I'm going to make a video for youtube with my phone (its all I have, lol) and I dont know what resolution is best... it has 3 options: 640x480, 320x240, and 176x144. I assume that the highest is the best but I have no idea. Which setting is best, and what do the numbers even mean?

  • Answer:

The best for any website would be the highest resolution, which in your case would be 640x480. If youtube needs the file to be smaller it should shrink the file automatically. By the way, the higher the numbers the higher the resolution. Its basically saying that horizontally there are 640 pixels across and 480 pixels vertically.

The BEST camera resolution is "ultra high definition". See the Red One and the Silicon Imaging products. In your list, best is 640 x 480... For my YouTube uploads, I record in 1080i HDV, edit then downsample to h.264/AVC/720p. That gives the viewer option to watch in "regular" high quality or high definition in 720p (presuming they have good bandwidth and their computer can handle it). The numbers you listed are the "native" size of computer-file video sizes. The first number is wide, the second number is tall - in pixels. When you use these sizes and have them fill a larger window, the video will look blurry and pixelated.
