What Camcorder Is Better?

Want to buy a HD camcorder, what is better HDD or Flash camcorders?

  • Initially I was going to buy a HDD camcorder but realised that most of them take digital stills with less mega pixels, and the ones that record onto flash take better quality digital stills. Overall, they both equally take good footage. Obviously if I buy a flash camcorder, I will have to buy a an SD card with it. Does that mean Flash camcorders are better than Hard Disk Drive camcorders?

  • Answer:

Consumer video cameras don’t provide high quality still images no matter if it’s recorded on internal memory or flash memory. The same goes for a still digital camera that has video recording capabilities…low resolution video. Many video cameras have both hard drive memory and flash memory. Personally, I always record on tape or to memory cards because I can use that method to change out the medium as I shoot video at different times and places. When you choose your memory card(s), get high capacity (HC) cards. They work best for video. Example, an SD (secure digital) card will say SDHC.

choose neither. HDV is still the way to go. when you record on tape, it's automatically archived.

I have both type of camcorders, the first one i bought was the HDD camcorder because i got it really cheap when i was living in Europe, the Flash camcorder was a gift from a friend. If I were you, i would go with a HDD camcorder, why?, because, besides the HDD, it also has (normally) a flash card slot too, so you can alternate and see which one works best for you. Of course, the HDD camcorder has more capacity, the one i have has 60GB hard drive, i don't think you can get a SD card of that size. If you're plan is not make movies with it, i would say: go with the HDD camcorder (and be sure it also has a SD card slot), the difference when it comes to image quality is not detectable for the "not expert in video" eye. Good luck.

You won't have to necessarily buy a SD card as some SSD (solid state drive or "flash") camcorders have the memory that already integrated into the camera. With an HDD camcorder you will most always get more storage space already integrated into the cam this will surely change in the near future as you can see this when you look at the SSD netbooks (same as flash memory) on the market you can get them with 80gb or more of memory. But if I had to say which one is better I would definitely go with a SSD (flash) camcorder check out this site for more info..... http://www.cheapvideocamera.org/SSD-Video-Cameras.html

Tape all the way. I have a Cannon HV30 and love it. Lets say your on vacation- fill up an hour tape- fine...pop in a new one and your up and running. If it's HDD or Flash, etc., you have to dump that video into your PC to keep going. It is also harder to edit. Lastly, the quality of tape is still best.

Flash is better because they have no hard drive to fail or break when you drop it. The medium makes no difference to the quality of the image (still or video)

Honestly speaking, i do agree with Acka that flash camcorders are better because they have no hard drive to fail or break when you drop it. Of course, there are more excellent features to make them deserve your admiration. Take one high performance 10.0 Mp Digital Camcorder+Remote Control+AV Out+HDMI EIS for example: Having a 3 inch flip out high definition LCD view screen and high-def resolution, this unit will have you easily making movie quality videos in no time. With this HD camcorder your personally made videos will be clearer than you ever imagined, so your videos will look just as good as any big budget Hollywood movie! Supporting up to up to SDHC 16GB (Class 6), it allows you to have enough capacity to store what your movies and pictures.
