There is almost no hardware difference between the PSP models. They are all the same. The differences are so insignificant that you shouldn't even worry about it. What you can do (although it's not entirely legal) is mod your PSP to be able to download games to it and therefore need to buy them anymore, and you can only do that on a PSP 2000 or older, but other than that it REALLY doesn't matter which one, just don't get the Go, it's a huge pain in the ***.

Personally, I prefer the original psp 1000 model because it is harder to break than the psp slim ( the psp slim is so skinny it easily breaks). Plus, a psp 1000 can be hacked and get internet access, unlike a psp 3000. Sony stopped making them in stores just to make money, but they still sell them online at amazon.com.
