What's your favorite camera to film with?

Whats a good, cheap camera to film a feature film with?

  • I am looking for a reasonable hand help camera that delivers great quality, something like the Canon XL2, but can anyone suggest any others for the same price range? Thanks

  • Answer:

The MSRP of the Canon XL2 with the stock lens from Canon is $3,999. Other cameras in the same range: Canon XHA1 - Does high definition and standard def - the XL2 is standard def only. Pro grade. Sony DSRPD170 - Does standard definition only - records to DVCAM tapes - not miniDV like the XL2 and XHA1. Pro grade. Sony HDR-FX1000 - Does high definition and standard def to miniDV tape. Prosumer (no XLR audio connectors - if needed, get an XLR adapter from juicedLink or BeachTek). Panasonic AG-DVX100B - Does standard definition only to miniDV tapes. Pro grade. Panasonic AG-HMC150 - Does anemic 21 mbps AVCHD high definition to flash memory (HDV is 25 mbps). I would not put this anywhere near a short list, but it had to be included here for completeness). JVC GY-HM100U (or 110U) - high definition; flash memory; native FinalCut file format. Pro grade.
