How good is the video quality on modern HD camcorders?

Is it true that a Camcorder with High Megapixels decrease the quality of video?

  • I wanted to buy a good Camcorder that I could do anything with it including taking pictures like NEX-5 quality. I have seen Canon G10, Canon HF S30, Sony CX700. However, I don't know which is the best among this 3. Canon G10 has 2.++MP, S30 hv 8mp n CX700 has 12mp. (it seems CX700 has high megapixels for taking still pictures) But I heard that HIGHER MEGAPIXELS gives lower quality of Video Taking HD. So, which is the best among all? Could suggest other Camcorders as well. PS: I like how Sony CX700 has a lot of features with Slow motion etc. N i heard Canon doesn't. So which do u recommend n y?

    Hmmmm I'm not sure if that's true but when you look at these cameras you have to see which camera shoots in full HD (1080p).

Broadcast television HD cameras use "native resolution", that is they have one pixel on the CCD for each pixel recorded. this gives superior results compared to trying to interpolate a large megapixel array down to 1080x1920. most CCDs continue to be 4:3 shape factor, so to get native resolution you need a 3 MP CCD. The top and bottom pixel rows are ignored to make the 16:9 2 MP HD picture. the best of the group for video is the Canon HF s30, dedicated camcorder. dSLR type cameras are highly compromised for video purposes.

Smaller consumer cameras are prone to more noise with higher MP rating, so generally...I stay away from cams with a MP of over 14. This is mostly because the device case and such is so small, that they can't fit a large sensor in there and so the noise levels go up and you get more grain in the video/image.
