What is the best brand of MiniDV Tapes?

Switching miniDV brand in a pinch?

  • I usually use Fujifilm brand miniDV tapes when I film, and realized I needed to get some more for a film shoot tomorrow on short notice. However, suddenly none of the local stores carry them any more. The only stocks I can find are Maxell and Polaroid. I know it's bad to switch brands, but if one of these is a dry lubricant like Fujifilm, should I be OK or will it clog up my camera's video heads?

  • Answer:

I have had the same problem, so I never change tapes, but I have been in the same situation as you. Make sure you clean the video heads very well, so basically they are spotless. then use the new tape/s when you change back do the same again. Some people say that the problem has gone as the makers have sorted out the issues, I have found that this is not the case, to my cost, 70 meters under water, you cannot just pop up to the surface and change a tape. Hope this helps RR

you learned a lesson. buy the tape in case lots. it is cheaper that way to boot. i get mine at taperesources.com but any professional camera store should be able to supply tape in case lots on request.
