What is the best brand of MiniDV Tapes?

What should I do with all of my MiniDV tapes?

  • For the last 10 years we have taken videos on MiniDV. We probably have something like 30-40 tapes. Right now they are kept in a box, but obviously there are a lot of memories there. I see there are MiniDV to DVD conversion services, which run about $10 per tape. That seems a bit expensive for 40 tapes. Are the current MiniDV tapes degrading? What recommended options are there? I also realize I can probably buy equipment to convert these to my PC, but that would be a very large amount of data storage needed and even harder to properly backup. Thanks for tips and ideas in advance!

    What we typically do is buy an external hard drive and capture them to that as individual files. External hard drive space is getting cheaper by the day.

And yes, over 10-15 mini DV tapes will degrade depending on the environment that you store them in. Good luck copying the tapes and preserving the memories. I hope everything works out

properly stored, miniDV tapes won't degrade. they are digital not analog so maintain perfect reproduction with age. the problem as you have discovered is keeping a suitable player running. If you buy another camcorder, a DVD recorder and blank DVDs you will have invested more than the $400 you don't want to spend. so your only option is to find a friend that will let you borrow a camcorder long enough to transfer the tapes yourself.

Buy a DVD recorder, about $50. Most of them have DV input, so you can do a pretty decent DVD recording. So $50 for DVD recorder and about $1 per disc
