What is the best camcorder I can get for £120?

What pocket sized camcorder should i get for around $120?

  • I only have about $120 to spend on a pocketsized camcorder and i need to know the best choice to make. I want to use this to make youtube videos, maybe sketch, maybe even a music video. So i need something in HD. Anyone have a good choice for me? I was told not to buy the flip... any opinions?

    Hi Vinrod: Although fellow Contributor Avadan has some nice suggestions on her blog, if you wish to make decent sketch videos or music videos, keep in mind that having an External Microphone input is an important feature (built in mikes don't always work the best). Also, contrary to your statement "So I need something in HD" for YouTube and your other projects, unless you have a really beefy PC or Mac (high-speed, multi-core, Gigabytes of RAM, etc.) HD video will bog down your computer. And you'll be disappointed with the video compression (and crappy audio digitizing) that cheap HD camcorders provide. YouTube is just a small-screen web video format, and Standard Def (640x480) is fine for the most-used viewing resolutions (240p, 360p, 480p). HD (720/1080) just sucks up more bandwidth and can make viewing choppy. Even standard DVDs can't handle HD resolution, without scaling-down. And contrary to popular belief, you can shoot 16:9 widescreen with many popular SD camcorders, for viewing on widescreen HDTVs. Also, dollar for dollar, a decent SD miniDV tape camcorder will outperform a cheap HD camcorder in imaging, audio features, etc. You can find something like a used Canon ZR-series or a JVC Everio or JVC GR-series in used camera stores or on eBay in your price range. hope this helps, --Dennis C.
