Where to connect a usb in a camcorder?

Is there a good mini-dv camcorder that uses usb and not firewire to connect to computer?

  • i have doing a lot research into camcorders and i think my best option right now would be a mini-dv since they have the best picture quality and i might want to edit the videos later on. Two things i'm trying to find in a relatively new model: usb connection to computer and good dim light recording. i'm looking into sony but could go to canon or other models. unfortunately, it seems that every sony and possibly canon mivi-dv use firewire. it seems like a pain in the but to get a firewire card and install when i have about 20 usb ports on my pc. i don't even know if i have an empty slot available anyway. are there any good mini-dvs that use a usb connection? how about good for dim light?

  • Answer:

No. MiniDV tape requires firewire for high quality DV (or HDV) video transfer. There is no consumer camcorder (does not matter storage media) under about $2,000 that will record will in low light. The lenses and imaging chips in consumer camcorders are too small. The new Canon HF-S100 might... 58mm diameter lens... bigger imaging chip than other consumer-grade camcorders.

one of the standards for the miniDV manufacturing license is that it have a "firewire" or ieee 1394 connection. you can thank Apple for that as they sat in on the standard setting committies. Bill Gates at the time (mid 1980s) thought that video editing on a computer was just so much silliness and would never be needed on Windows and ignored helping set standards. some miniDV multipurpose cameras store still photos on a memory card, and those can be accessed by USB but not the video. USB is ok for file transfer which is handled in a start/stop manner much like ethernet, but is not really intended for continuous uninterupted streaming applications.

Two good answers already! Assuming you've got a spare slot, adding a firewire card isn't that much of a pain - maybe $20 and 5 mins work. Don't be tempted to get a firewire to USB converter - they don't work! JVC and Panasonic are also good makes.
