Why won't my camcorder work on my computer?

Will the Sony Handycam DCR-DVD308 DVD Camcorder work with my Mac computer? What about just Sony?

  • I asked in an earlier question what kinds of camcorders would work with my mac and I was told that DVD camcorders wouldn't work...But I found this camcorder at the Macmall(http://www.macmall.com/macmall/shop/detail.asp?dpno=7182296&Redir=1&description=Sony-DCR-DVD308%20DVD%20Handycam%AE%20Camcorderspacer-Video) and it said that it would be compatiable with Mac AND PC... Has anyone had any experiance with DVD camcorders and Mac? Or just Sony in general with Mac? Thanks so much!

    Here are lots of discussion re: Sony DVD camcorders & mac computers. Other than that the mac computers with a slot loading DVD drive can not load the mini DVDs, the finalized disc (by the camcorder) can be viewed in most newer DVD drives/players. The major problem is that iMovie can not edit the mpeg2 videos - but there's a work-around by using MPEG Streamclip (http://www.squared5.com/ ) to convert the videos to DV-AVI.

If you want trouble free video import for editing in iMovie, get a camcorder that has Mini DV or HDV format. If you want to record footage and watch directly from a DVD player then purchase the DCR-DVD308. EDIT: iMovie HD supports multiple video formats and allows you to create projects that are tailored to your specific video format. You can use the following formats in iMovie HD: DV DV Widescreen HDV 1080i (25 and 30 fps) HDV 720p (25 and 30 fps) MPEG 4 Simple Profile iSight The DCR-DVD308 has a MPEG2 format.

I bought this camera, and i have an Apple Mac. The disc cant be played using it, and the usb cable cannot transfer the video to it. Apparently Sony technology doesnt work with Apples, so i took it back and bought the JVC GZ-MG21, and that works perfectly, with iMovie and all my other Apple Mac programs. Hope this works out for you!
